The Public Health Institute at Denver Health (PHIDH) Immunization and Travel Clinic: Protecting Community Health Across Denver

When we vaccinate, we all stay safe

Vaccines are one of history’s most important public health achievements. Their core purpose is to prevent illness, reduce suffering, and eliminate disease. The CDC estimates that the widespread vaccination of children born between 1994 and 2023 will have prevented 508 million illnesses, avoided 1.1 million deaths, and saved nearly $2.7 trillion in societal costs (learn about the CDC's Vaccines for Children (VFC) Program).

Why do people vaccinate?

  • To protect their children from preventable illness and distress
  • To safeguard their families and community from outbreaks
  • To support global efforts to reduce and eradicate dangerous diseases

(Learn about the benefits of vaccines - Immunize for Good)

Medical experts, including doctors and scientists, overwhelmingly agree that vaccination is a safe and effective way to protect against serious illness.

Removing barriers to vaccination

PHIDH’s Immunization and Travel Clinic plays a vital role in preventing disease and safeguarding community health across Denver. In 2025, the team administered 22,227 vaccines to 8,714 patients and earned a 95% patient satisfaction rating, reflecting both the scale of the work and the quality of care delivered.

The Immunization Clinic provides a robust range of vaccine services at the Outpatient Medical Center and throughout the city and county of Denver. When possible, the team removes financial barriers for eligible populations, helping reduce the risk of communicable disease in underserved communities.

Clinics are scheduled several times each week and vary by location, date, and time, including evenings and weekends, to better accommodate working adults.

Supporting students and families

PHIDH also provides routine vaccinations to children through the In-School Immunization Program, which serves Denver Public Schools. By hosting on-site vaccination events during the school day, the program reduces the need for parents or guardians to miss work for medical appointments. Vaccinations are provided regardless of insurance coverage, helping ensure equitable access to care for students and families.

A personalized approach to travel health

The Travel Clinic serves as a one-stop resource for individuals preparing to travel abroad, offering protection against region-specific health risks such as malaria, typhoid, Japanese encephalitis, and yellow fever. Patients consistently note how surprised they are by the depth and personalization of their travel consultations.

Travel nurses tailor recommendations to each individual’s health history, vaccination records, and itinerary. To expand access, PHIDH recently launched telehealth travel consultations statewide, making these services available to more Coloradans while supporting revenue-generating elective care that helps sustain other clinic services.

At the heart of the work: the team

Comments from the 2025 patient satisfaction survey reflect what colleagues already know: this is a team deeply committed to compassionate, patient-centered care.

As PHIDH continues to meet the needs of a growing and increasingly diverse population, the Immunization and Travel Clinic exemplifies the institute’s commitment to prevention, health equity, and community-centered care.
